Le WWF North American Heavyweight Championship est souvent considérer comme le "père" du titre Intercontinental, qui fut créer après la dissolution de ce titre, à peine deux ans après sa création. Il connut très peu de champion diffèrent.
06/03/1979 : Ted DiBiase (Le titre a été offert à Ted DiBiase par la WWF lorsque ce dernier signait à la fédération, à Allentown, PA)
19/06/1979 : Pat Patterson (battant Ted DiBiase à Allentown, PA)
08/11/1979 : Seiji Sakaguchi (battant Pat Patterson à Otaru, Japan)
Le titre était retiré le 20 Mars 1981. Cependant, cela faisait bien longtemps qu'il avait été officiellement fusionner au South American Championships par Pat Patterson pour créer le WWF Intercontinental Championship.
