G1 Climax

Le G-1 Climax est LE tournoi annuel de la NJPW et l'un des plus prestigieux au monde. Cependant, il ne porte ce nom que depuis 1991. Auparavant, le tournoi a eu plusieurs noms :
- World League (1974 à 1977)
- MSG League (1978 à 1982)
- International Wrestling Grand Prix (1983 à 1988)
- World Tournament (1989).

Dans sa forme actuelle, les différents catcheurs sont répartis en deux groupes (appelé BLOCK A et B). Chaque block a un classement (victoire = 2 pts, nul = 1 pt et défaite = 0 pt). Les catcheurs du même block se rencontrent tous une fois puis le 1er du Block A affronte le 1er du Block B lors d'une grande finale. Le vainqueur obtient un trophée, mais aussi un match pour l'IWGP Heavyweight championship au plus grand show de la New Japan, Wrestle Kingdom.

Suite à la domination d'Antonio Inoki sur le tounoi annuel, la New Japan décide que ce tournoi servira pour mettre en valeur les catcheurs importants de la fédération. Ainsi, depuis 2012, en plus de remporter un événement majeur, le vainqueur du G-1 obtient également un match pour l'IWGP Heavyweight championship au plus grand show de la New Japan, Wrestle Kingdom. Cepandant, il doit défendre son dû jusqu'à la fin de l'année, WK se déroulant le 04 janvier.
