Le titre a été retiré à Zbyszko à la fin du mois d'Avril par le président de la fédération à l'époque, Bob Geigel, car ce dernier estimait que la ceinture n'était pas achetable. Un tournoi est alors organiser afin d'élire un nouveau champion.

Le 23 Mai 2002, Shinya Hashimoto bat Hernandez à Tokyo, cependant, le japonais refuse de garder le titre. Il est alors rendu à ce dernier et le match a Tokyo est déclarer un non-title match.
